About a day after coming back from Chicago, Ill… I jetted of to Phoenix, Arizona for doctoral residency. Attending residency this year was a surreal experience. Year three residency officially marked the beginning stages of me being very close to receiving my terminal degree (as long as I finish my dissertation). In Phoenix I spent two weeks in class from 8AM-5PM. Being in class for about nine hours a day was not easy. If you’re wondering if I had an off day during the two-week residency the answer is sadly, NO! I have been back home for a few days now and I am still trying to catch up on rest.

I persevered through the two weeks of intense scholarly work like a champ, but there were many moments were I did not think I was going to make it. Thankfully, my family in Phoenix and a visit from my L.A. friend empowered me to push through.

The new connections I have made with students and faculty members has truly been amazing and unforgettable. I look forward to staying connected with my peers from class as we progress towards the finish line (Dr. Peach coming soon).

If you are in a doctoral program or just going through life struggles…I highly suggest the Seven Habits of Exceptionally Resilient People to overcome any life challenge.

Resilient People:

  1.  Have a strong sense of purpose
  2. Are self-reliant
  3. Have a supportive network
  4. Are accepting
  5. Are optimists
  6. Turn adversity into opportunities for growth
  7. Take care of their health

If you practice the seven habits or have your own go-to mantras, let me know in the comment section.

Until next time…

FullSizeRenderTo kick off my departure from job, on the very last work day I headed on a plane to Chicago, Ill. I figured what better way to cement new growth then by taking a trip.  Not to mention, I was ready to see Beyoncé and get in formation. By the way…Beyoncé is an amazing performer, during the concert I kept questioning whether or not she was even human (while shedding tears as she performed). When you watch Beyoncé perform she is the direct reflection of what happens when you are directly aligned with your life purpose.

The next day after the Beyoncé concert my friends and I enjoyed everything Chicago had to offer. From great food, attractions, and boat parties… I truly celebrated life! Which speaks to my new goal of truly embracing the great moments in my life, as I do the bad moments in my life. In order to feel the highs of life, I have to be comfortable feeling the lows.

I would have posted this blog sooner, but I have been traveling non-stop since the end of May. Here are a few pics I captured during my festivities.

IMG_2695In mist of writing my dissertation I recently went on a trip to Las Vegas. I figured…taking a trip to relieve stress and refuel my motivation as a student would be the best remedy. The trip was originally planned for a “baecation”. However, shit happens and when it does you just make lemonade out of lemons. Right?

IMG_2699In Vegas my friends and I had an amazing spring break. It was the right amount of turn-up. I snapped a few pics. Only a few pics because as the saying goes…what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

IMG_2688If your visiting Vegas any time soon I highly recommend these five things:

  1. Club Crawls-best way to enjoy the night life in Vegas.
  2. The MTO Cafe-awesome local spot.
  3. Voodoo Zipline at The Rio hotel-scary but fun.
  4. Downtown Container Park-very unique and cool.
  5. Urban Tom’s– the menu is insane!
  6. Uber-cheaper than a taxi.

Until next time…

Hey-hey,

This summer was on of the best summers I have ever had in a really long time. Although, there were many life changing moments that happened. Every moment was worth it! Having the time to travel and experience life outside of my day-to-day regimen was something I needed. From Phoenix-Denver-Iowa-Chicago-Birmingham-Atlanta I learned a lot about myself and surprisingly my family heritage (I share about this in another blog post).

mlk1

From my summer travels here are five simple things I learned:

  1. Be more risk taking- Explore things that you necessarily wouldn’t if you where in the comforts of your home town.
  2. Randomly strike up a conversation- You never known who you will meet, and it always interesting to hear peoples life stories.
  3. Eat what you want- Its a vacation for crying out loud!
  4. Enjoy the people you travel with- Whether its family or friends, spending time with the people you love is a luxury. Don’t take it for granted, every day is not promised!
  5. Make time for meditation- Centering yourself when traveling from place-to-place will help to make the vacation experience more rewarding and positive.

Until the next destination…
