When I Fell in Love With Black Women

December 23, 2019

This past weekend I had the honor of attending the event, When I Fell in Love With Black Women. The event was presented by Venus Clapback. Venus Clapback is a podcast hosted by Muse and Coco. The event was beautiful! I felt save and celebrated in this curated space! The event left me thinking about “when I fell in love with Black women”?

When I fell in love with Black women, I want to share about an experience from three years ago. Three years ago, I was at my lowest point. I remember the day when I realized I needed help! I called my mom sobbing. In a faint voice, I said to my mom “I need help”. My mom said, “baby it’s okay to seek help”. The comforting sound of my mom’s voice was the reassurance I needed to find a therapist. I am thankful to my mother because she was the sound voice I needed to get out of my own way.

Fast forward, I started working with my therapist. I chose a Black woman therapist. After years of working together, my therapist was moving to a new state. Prior to her move, we decided to break bread together. One final meal to celebrate all the great work we completed together. After our meal, we said our good byes. Immediately when I got into the car and cried.

It was in that moment, I fell in love with Black women for the umpteenth time. This woman played a significant role in my life. I am forever thankful for her grace. I get teary eyed thinking about the impact she had in my life. She allowed me to attend sessions when I couldn’t afford to pay. She arranged her schedule and made time to meet with me. She answered my calls at random hours of the night. No matter how depressed, anxious, or problematic I was she never gave up on me. Knowing that our relationship forever changed with the move, I had to mourn the relationship gracefully.

I knew that our work together was done and served its purpose. I knew it was time for her to go-fourth and help other Black women. The space and time we shared could never be duplicated. I am grateful for our frequencies crossing paths when they did. Black women are dope and beyond magical. Between the support of my mother and therapist, they showed up for me when I could not show up for myself. The support I received was the embodiment of love. This is when I fell in love with Black women.

I love Black women. I am a Black woman. I come from a strong lineage of Black women. And I will forever support Black women.

Until Next Time…

Black Women Excellence: Queen and Slim Film

December 2, 2019

Queen and Slim! Don’t even know where to begin. Saw the movie yesterday. Still in deep thought. Words can’t even describe what this movie means to me! There are many things I want to say but can’t put into context. So instead, I will just celebrate the work of Lena Withe (screenplay writer) and Melina Matsoukas (director) of film Queen and Slim. These Black women need to be protected at all costs.

These divine goddesses created a body of work, intentionally curated from the tutelage of a higher power. They are important for the culture. They are the embodiment of Black Women Excellence. This was a film I didn’t know I needed. This film changed the zeitgeist of what it means to be Black in America. Thank you, Lena and Melina, for creating a safe space for Black culture to authentically exist. Black people are magical and this film encapsulates that. If you haven’t seen the film yet, just go see it!

Until Next Time…

4:44

July 5, 2017

Lately the universe has presenting the numbers 4 and 44 to me (I can’t make this ish up). I’m intrigued by numerology. Numbers vibrate and carry different meanings. Prior to Jay Z releasing his 13th studio album 4:44, I was doing research on the number 4 and 44. The number 444 vibrates and carries the meaning of intuition, stability, responsibility and productivity. 444 is the universes way of communicating the necessity for us to keep working towards our goals. When vibrating in the energy of 444 when have to trust our intuition in knowing that divine guidance will help us persevere through anything. We just have to be determined. 444 can be broken down in many different complexities (like the elements of Earth, wind, fire, water)…but for the sake of this blog post, I’ll save my numerology theories for another time.

Alright…back to 444. From seeing the number 4 and 44 and later finding out Jay Z was releasing an album titled 4:44 the synchronicities were aligning. In my mind, I was like…”alright universe I see what you’re doing here”. 444 symbolized that what I needed to understand wasn’t resonating. Needless to say, I was overly intrigued to hear the album because of the numbers 4:44.

I have been vibing to the album since Friday, and haven’t listened to anything else. The album 4:44 is reflective of the 444-numerology meaning and the other meanings Jay Z associated with 4:44. The album is a beautiful body of art. Not gonna lie, I shed a few tears especially when I heard the song 4:44 (based from my own personal experiences).

I would argue it is Jay Z’s best album. The authentic narratives he shared was a manifesto of spirituality, Black excellence, Black men, escaping generational trauma, gaining generational wealth, being Black in America, love, emotional unavailability, healing (I could go on and on). I say all that to say Jay Z has done some self-work. In doing self-work the process isn’t pretty. In the process, we learn that our pain leads us to our true selves. With the changes that Jay Z is making, I hope the vibrational frequency of 4:44 encourages people to do their own healing work.

Until next time…

Podcast Roundup

November 7, 2016

It’s been a while since I’ve shared my favorite podcasts. I wanted to do a quick round-up of my favorite podcasts at the moment. The podcasts I listen too are intentional in the context of helping me raise my vibration levels higher. With raising your vibration levels, you have to be conscious of what you listen to (amongst many other things). Listening to motivating/uplifting content puts me in a great mental space. However, there are days when I just want to listen to something a little rachet…it’s all about balance right?

Here are my current podcast faves:

  1. The Friend Zone
  2. Wining with Doctoral Students
  3. Insecuritea: The Insecure Aftershow
  4. Black Girl In Om
  5. Tax Season
  6. Happy Black Woman Podcast with Rosetta Thurman
  7. The Brilliant Idiots
  8. Having It A.L.L with Matthew Bivens
  9. Mattielogie
  10. The Read

Take a listen to these podcasts if your’re in need of interesting yet unpredictable audio content. #Happylistening

Until next time…

The Birth Of A Nation

October 10, 2016

download

This past weekend I went and saw the film The Birth of a Nation. As a creative, I make it a point to support other creatives. The film was nothing short of amazing. I cried, gasp, cheered, and reflected throughout the entire film. This was the first film where I walked out the theater and said absolutely nothing! About 20 minutes after watching the film I was ready to dialogue.

Feeling the intensity of the film, my friend and I sat for an hour discussing the themes and narratives throughout the film. The Birth of a Nation film is much needed. It is time for people of all races and cultures to WAKE UP…and start having more authentic conversations about injustices in the world. The film promotes the level of discussion that is needed when addressing race relations in America. This is the type of film that moves Black culture forward. From my lens as a Black woman, watching the movie inspired me.

Inspired in the sense of knowing my ancestors fought for me to be in this very position I’m in. Inspired in the sense that I know who I am, and I know where I come from. Thinking back on the day I visited the slave plantation where part of my family roots started, experiencing the narrative of Nat Turner in visual form was a full-circle moment.

From watching the film, what I know for sure is that we all have a little of Nat Turner spirit inside of us. When the moment arises for us to shift paradigms, and make progressive changes in our respected industries…we must rise to the occasion.

I don’t want to spoil the film, for those that have not seen the film yet. All I have to say is the film is a must see.

Until next time…

Black Woman Excellence: Insecure

October 10, 2016

My favorite content creator Issa Rae has done it again with her new show Insecure. Like many other internet enthusiasts, I discovered Rae on YouTube from her web series The Misadventrues of an AWKARD Black Girl. A few episodes into her web series, I knew that it would only be a matter of time before others began to catch on to Rae’s creative genius.

I watched the first episode of Insecure and I am excited for the entire season! Rae does an amazing job of sharing the Black woman narrative for educated, 20-something, non-married Black woman. In the words of Solange Knowles, “this ish is for US”. Last night was a celebratory moment in television. The Insecure show is a breath of fresh-air to all of the reality TV content that reflects Black women in a negative/demeaning light. I just want to thank Rae for using her platform to share what me and many other Black women have experienced. Rae’s is providing a voice to many Black women that have been marginalized in society.

I’m glad to see Rae WINNING! When Rae wins, other Black women around the world win. Which brings light to the quote, “I am not my sister’s keeper, I am my sister”- Iyanla Vanzant.

Watch the show and support, trust me you’ll enjoy it.

Until next time…

Black Woman Excellence: A Seat At The Table

September 30, 2016

Photo From SolangeMusic.com

Since this morning… I have been on an intimate date with my iPhone 7 headphones, and we have been enjoying a lustful union themed by the sounds of  A Seat at the Table by Solange. This album makes me just want to get lost in nature, put my phone on do not disturb, and let the cool breeze flow through my natural hair.  The work that she has created is brilliant! It is the sheer reflection of Black Excellence. At this present moment, Black people as a whole need to be uplifted and celebrated… and Solange’s music does just that. The album visuals (digital book) is an added bonus of melanin finesse.

The entire album is LIT… but here are the top songs I’m currently vibing too:

  1. Cranes in The Sky
  2. Interlude: Tina Taught Me
  3. Don’t Touch My Hair
  4. F.U.B.U
  5. Bordline
  6. Interlude: I Got So Much Magic
  7. Don’t Wish Me Well

This album speaks to Black culture and the beauty of Black people. If you haven’t heard great music in a while, I highly suggest this album and no… you don’t have to be Black to enjoy  A Seat at the Table.

Until next time…

Lemonade Stan

April 25, 2016

Photo From Parkwood/Tidal

This weekend was incredible! While enjoying the nice weather, spending time with family/friends, and writing my dissertation (still a work in progress) I was anticipating the Lemonade premiere by Beyoncé. Prior to the Lemonade premiere I didn’t know what to expect, but I was hoping it had something to do with a new album release. Like everyone else I was thinking….c’mon B…please drop your album before I see you in concert so that I can be in formation.

Queen B not only answered my request but over delivered. To be honest, I am still trying to process everything that happened in the Lemonade film. Beyoncé was telling the story of my life. The concepts of love, vulnerability, relationships, infidelity, heartbreak, trust, and what it means to be a Black woman in America is a part of my everyday reality. The story Beyoncé told in the Lemonade film was needed. The Black women narrative is so important, yet it is marginalized in mainstream America. Lemonade was a true visual and musical reflection of Black Girl Magic!

My emotions while watching Lemonade was all over the place. Feelings of sadness, anger, and joy all in the same breath was intense but AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL! After watching the film several times and having the album on repeat…here’s what I know to be true as reiterated by Beyoncé in the Lemonade film…

  1. Love is beautiful.
  2. When life gives you lemons make lemonade.
  3. Black lives matter.
  4. In every life struggle you must persevere.
  5. If a man can’t love you the way you deserve then leave him.

Until next time…

Everything I Did Wrong

February 4, 2016

everythingPhoto from inkSpotEntertainment

This week has been a short but long week. It was nice having a snow day but after endless naps and dreadful cabin fever, I was completely bored. It wasn’t like I didn’t have any homework or work to do. I honestly didn’t feel like doing any work period. So, during the snow day I searched online until I stumbled across a new YouTube series. For me, finding a new YouTube series is like finding internet gold (bring on the binge watching).

What I like about YouTube is that content creators have the freedom to tell stories from their perspectives. In fact, YouTube is one of the few mediums where content celebrating different cultures is actually supported. As we all know, in mainstream America various mediums lack diverse perspectives and diverse people.

Okay so back to the web series. The series is titled everything I did wrong in my 20’s. When I saw the title I was already lured in, because I have been doing so many things wrong in my 20’s. With the month of March officially marking the last year of my 20’s, I plan to make right my wrongs so that my 30’s can be poppin.

The series is a part of inkSpotEntertainment founded by Kim Williams who also writes/produces everything I did wrong in my 20’s. The series does an amazing job of vividly telling the narrative of women in their 20’s making choices that cause unhappiness later in life. The main character of the series Stephanie Rogers feels like my spirit animal. Needless to say, I binged watched season one and I am highly anticipating season two.

Check out the series below.

Until next time…
