Happy Black History Month!

February 10, 2020

Happy Black History Month beautiful ones. I know we are a week and some change into Black History Month. I didn’t want more time to past without acknowledging Black History Month.

Yoooooo (in my voice). I love being Black. LOVE being Black. Black people are magical. We are strong! We are resilient! We are trendsetters! We are diverse! We are candid! We are funny! We are beautiful! We are everything!

From our kinky coils too our saucy swag, we illuminate even when people try to dim our light. I’m proud to be Black! In the words of Issa Rae, “I rooting for everybody Black.” I will be celebrating Black History Month this year. I’ve been celebrating Black History Month since I was young. In fact…

I remember one year in elementary school, I told the teacher I was upset with her because she celebrated every holiday/event but never celebrated Black History Month. Very next day, the classroom was decorated and we talked about the impact and necessity of Black people in the world.

Black people let’s use this month and every month after to celebrate ourselves, heal ourselves, and move our culture forward (Black people doing right by Black people). If your in the Arizona area and want to celebrate Black History Month, here are some events I found online:

  • Black Theatre Troupe in Phoenix: http://new-wp.blacktheatretroupe.org/trouble-in-mind/
  • Brophy Black History Month Festival: https://www.brophyprep.org/about/parents/brophy-black-family-alliance
  • Brunch Ish: https://brunchishdayparty.com/
  • Film Screening The Brother From Another Planet: https://live-timely-fzn9b7gebi.time.ly/event/film-screening-the-brother-from-another-planet/?instance_id=11126
  • Creative Writing Workshop: https://www.iamrootco.com/events-1/creative-writing-workshop-luv-week
  • Paint & Sip Luv Week: https://www.iamrootco.com/events-1/paint-sip-luv-week
  • Black Girl Survival Camp: http://www.blackgirlsurvivalcamp.com/

Happy Black History Month, yall!

Shout out to the ancestors!

Until Next Time…

Black Women Excellence: Queen and Slim Film

December 2, 2019

Queen and Slim! Don’t even know where to begin. Saw the movie yesterday. Still in deep thought. Words can’t even describe what this movie means to me! There are many things I want to say but can’t put into context. So instead, I will just celebrate the work of Lena Withe (screenplay writer) and Melina Matsoukas (director) of film Queen and Slim. These Black women need to be protected at all costs.

These divine goddesses created a body of work, intentionally curated from the tutelage of a higher power. They are important for the culture. They are the embodiment of Black Women Excellence. This was a film I didn’t know I needed. This film changed the zeitgeist of what it means to be Black in America. Thank you, Lena and Melina, for creating a safe space for Black culture to authentically exist. Black people are magical and this film encapsulates that. If you haven’t seen the film yet, just go see it!

Until Next Time…

New Year Essentials

January 3, 2016

1-2 example

2016 is officially here! For this year I am expecting great things to manifest. To help manifest the great things I want to accomplish, I felt it was only right to to grab a few essential items to start the new year with a bang.

Here’s what I picked up during my holiday festivities:

Journals

  • The gratitude journal keeps me mindful of all the blessings I receive.
  • A new writing journal is always necessary or maybe I just have an obsession with journals. Anywho, out with the old and in with the new! Every year is different, and stifling energy from the previous year’s journal shouldn’t be carried over into the new year.

Candles

  • Chakra candles are perfect for meditation and speaking what I need into existence.

Bracelets

  • The gemstone healing bracelets help with keeping my anxiety down and defending off negative energy.

Lotion

  • The aromatherapy lotion Energy from Bath and Body Works not only smells good but is great for boosting energy, which is something I need when I get physically and mentally fatigue at times.

If there are any new year essentials you use comment below.

Until next time…

Thanksgiving 2015

November 27, 2015

turkey

The holiday season is always my favorite, I promise you it’s not because of the food…alright maybe the food has a little to do with it but, ultimately it is the time I get to spend with friends and family. Also for me, the holidays symbolize the closing of the year, and gives me the chance to reflect on things I need to improve on in the New Year. For this year’s Thanksgiving my family came together to celebrate life. Let me tell you…getting 30+ people in one space at one time was a massive undertaking, not to mention that only a small fraction of the family actually came. Being in such great energy and positive spirits yesterday night inspired me to create a list of what I am thankful for.

Here is my thankful list in no particular order:

  1. Everyday I wake up
  2. My parents
  3. My siblings (nieces & nephew)
  4. My relationship
  5. Being loved and loving others
  6. Having a strong support system around me
  7. My family and friends
  8. My courage and strength
  9. Being able to help others
  10. Alone time
  11. A roof over my head
  12. Google
  13. Employment
  14. Traveling
  15. All the blessings that I receive

If you have things that you are thankful for share them below in the comment section.

Until next time…
