Success…How bad do you want it?

December 4, 2015

successSuccess. Most people want success but don’t want to work for it. Time and time again I hear people talking about success and how to become successful but they’re not successful. I always attribute limited success to a person’s mind state. When you have the right mind state you are able to accomplish the impossible. For those that know me, know that I have the Sean “Diddy” Combs mind state the…can’t stop…won’t stop….hustle to there’s not a second left.

For me, success consists of sleepless nights and early mornings. People always assume that things are so sweet for me and extremely easy. However, what people don’t see is me working two jobs; which consists of me taking work home, and working on the weekends.

What people don’t see is me working on my doctoral degree, which consists of sifting/reading through scholarly journals and writing papers (I wish my dissertation was completed by now). What people don’t see is my struggle with feeling exhausted, and relying on faith to push me through when I have no more to give. What people don’t see is my anxiety becoming overwhelming, and trying to carry on with day to day life when I’m not okay.

It is easy for people to say when things get overwhelming to just quit, but what does quitting do for you besides… make you unsuccessful and make you hate on people whose ambition led them to greatness. Success it what you make it, and when you’re not successful the only person you can blame is yourself (not your mom, not your dad, not your childhood, not your circumstances).

To create and maintain success here are a few tips:

  1. Set goals-Whether your goals are yearly, monthly, weekly, or daily it helps you understand your vision clearly.
  2. Prioritize your time- When your time is limited don’t waste time on insignificant things or insignificant people.
  3. Growth mindset- Use your talents to maximize your potential through hard work and positive thinking.
  4. Inner circle- Be surrounded with people that support and uplift you.
  5. Believe- Believe in my vision, most importantly believe in yourself.

Success is possible you just have to want it bad enough!

Until next time…

Thanksgiving 2015

November 27, 2015

turkey

The holiday season is always my favorite, I promise you it’s not because of the food…alright maybe the food has a little to do with it but, ultimately it is the time I get to spend with friends and family. Also for me, the holidays symbolize the closing of the year, and gives me the chance to reflect on things I need to improve on in the New Year. For this year’s Thanksgiving my family came together to celebrate life. Let me tell you…getting 30+ people in one space at one time was a massive undertaking, not to mention that only a small fraction of the family actually came. Being in such great energy and positive spirits yesterday night inspired me to create a list of what I am thankful for.

Here is my thankful list in no particular order:

  1. Everyday I wake up
  2. My parents
  3. My siblings (nieces & nephew)
  4. My relationship
  5. Being loved and loving others
  6. Having a strong support system around me
  7. My family and friends
  8. My courage and strength
  9. Being able to help others
  10. Alone time
  11. A roof over my head
  12. Google
  13. Employment
  14. Traveling
  15. All the blessings that I receive

If you have things that you are thankful for share them below in the comment section.

Until next time…

Embracing Vulnerability

November 20, 2015

vul

Embracing vulnerability is the scariest shit in the word. Being vulnerable means entertaining the truth and dancing intimately with your reality. At the beginning of 2015, vulnerability showed up in my world, like an unwanted house guest admittedly knocking at the door. I truly don’t know why I was so surprised because, vulnerability was something I unconsciously spoke into existence on my 2015 vision board.

As a result, in 2015 I have been living my truth, and feeling emotions that I have tried to suppress. Being vulnerable is not an easy challenge, and I am constantly reminded of this… especially when my anxiety takes things to a whole another level.

And lately it seems like I have been encountering many situations where I have had to wear my vulnerability like a badge of honor saying, “I am who I am, whether people like it or not”.

So far my moments of vulnerability have included:

  • Being vulnerable when it comes to being in a relationship and learning how to love.
  • Being vulnerable when it comes to trying new things.
  • Being vulnerable when it comes to embracing my authentic self.
  • Being vulnerable when it comes to truly feeling my emotions and being conscious of how I feel at the moment.
  • Being vulnerable when it comes to speaking my mind.
  • Being vulnerable when it comes to taking time for myself and not apologizing for it.

My list of vulnerable moments can go on and on, but what is sweet about my vulnerable moments is seeing the personal growth that I have made. Research professor Brene Brown was correct, there is power in vulnerability. My power from simply being vulnerable is starting to change my perspective and causing me to take more risks. Even though I am scared as shit while taking those risks.

If you haven’t welcomed vulnerability into your life I truly suggest you give it a try.

Until next time…

Quotes and Notes #2

November 12, 2015

energy

Energy is everything. I find energy to be my intuitive power. Within my first interaction of meeting someone I can genuinely determine the type of person they are just based on their energy. Some may call it being judgmental, but I consider it to be my protection shield. Basically,  I weed out all of the b.s. in order to save myself the headache later down the road.

Most people are not aware of the energy they bring into the room. In fact, when people are not aware of the energy they bring to into the room it is a bit disrespectful and inconsiderate. If the energy you enter the room with is negative it can be draining. However, if the energy you enter the room in is positive it can be exhilarating for others.

As the Law of Conversation of Energy goes…energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be transferred. Ironically, people with negative energy are always lurking trying to transfer their energy on to people with positive vibes. When that happens the best thing you an do is not get pulled into their vortex, by avoiding them at all costs.

Dr. Jill Taylor said it best…”take responsibility for the energy you bring into a space.” Being conscious of the energy we bring is the best thing we can do when trying to live better mental, physical, and spiritual lives.

Until next time…

#UglyTruth

November 3, 2015

being mary jane

Lasts week’s episode of TV show Being Mary Jane was intense. In fact, I think the word intense does even begin to describe how impactful and riveting the show was. There were so many eye opening/jaw dropping moments in episode three that definitely left me in tears towards the end of the show. The discussion of suicide, depression, sexual abuse, and being a strong black woman was a story plot that needed to be told on prime time TV.

Many people can say what the want about Mary Jane waiting until the eulogy speech to drop a major bomb, but sometimes there is no correct way/moment to say whats real…you just have to go for it! From episode three, a lot of thoughts resurfaced in my mind about past experiences, and things that I am currently working on. As a result, this is what I took away from the show…

  1. We are all pretending to be okay and were truly not okay.
  2. Black women don’t have to be strong all the time.
  3. Learn to be more truthful with people.
  4. Be willing to live your truth.
  5. Love people no matter what their truth is.
  6. It is okay to be vulnerable.

On that note, all I can say is that the writer of Being Mary Jane Mara Brock Akil inspired a lot of viewers to get real with themselves and start living their #uglytruth.

Until next time…

Because I’m Happy…

October 27, 2015

kaboompics.com_Happy CoffeeEveryday I am learning more about what happiness is, and what I now know for sure is that happiness is a choice! I strive for happiness everyday but lets be honest, things happen and ish gets real. When ish gets real, my ideal mental state of tranquility and positivity can quickly shift into an unsolicited visit from my arch-nemesis Negative Nancy.

With my sanity being one of my top priorities, I make it a habit to redirect my negative energy by doing things that make me happy. When it comes to instant feel-good practices, there are a few things can quickly get me back on track.

My top five ways to maintain happiness are:

  1. Relaxation time-meditation and sleep are the ultimate remedies.
  2. Doing things I enjoy-reading blogs and watching YouTube videos is my favorite obsession.
  3. Writing- helps me to get all of my thoughts out.
  4. Acknowledging how blessed I am-gratitude determines your altitude.
  5. Listening to music-listening to the right song and the right moment creates moments of pure bliss.

Whether its relaxing or writing, it is important to find out what makes you happy. My happiness means everything to me because it helps me find piece of mind. Choosing happiness is my choice, and I know that I am deserving of it. Everyone is deserving of happiness, however it is up to us to take responsibility for our own joy.

Until next time…

Quotes and Notes

June 25, 2015

As WE WORK TO CREATE LIGHT FOR OTHERS,

One of the things I loveee the most other than… food, self-help books, music, and shopping is QUOTES! It’s something about a good quote that gives me the burst of energy I need. Or helps me shift my mood when I am having a shitty day.  I guess you could call me a quote connoisseur. I have quotes all over my house, on my desk at work, in my phone, in my purse. My obsession with quotes is literally insane! So, to share a little inspiration the “Quotes and Notes” feature will be a  staple feature on the blog.

Until next time…
